Bridge from Komarna to Peljesac

Facts about the bridge:

Length: 2374 m.
Pillars: 13
Height of pillars: more than 100 meters
Height of bridge: 35 meters
Opening is expected in 2009

12. April 2008: On our day of departure they started work again and worked all through the night as if trying to catch up.

Picture taken from the mountains above Komarna showing the works on both sides of the Mali Ston Channel

8. April 2008: Land works on Peljesac has now started - and seems to have ended again. Rumors are that funding has stopped. The land works are clearly vissible from Komarna and no doubt it will continue again soon.

February 2008: Nothing new to report. No visible activities.

October 2007: There is now visible land works going on at Peljesac. Croatia is still negotiating with the BiH government and no new work seems to have been done at the mainland side. But the word is that soon the foundation work for the pillars will start. Local entrepeneurs are rumoured to have invested in equipment already,

June 2007: Nothing much seems to be going on. Local knowledge is that it is due to the protest of BiH to the hight of the bridge. BiH wants it to be 55 meters high to enable big ships to go into Neum. Since there isn't an harbour in Neum and no way to see how there will ever be one it all is a bit strange.

April 4. 2007: Bosnia Hercegovina has protested that the bridge will prevent larger ships to enter their territorial waters in Neum. Croatia has suggested that they could build a bascule bridge and negotiations are ongoing.

April 15. 2006: Lots and lots of rock have been moved to make the road down to the first pillar of the bridge. There is no doubt now that the Croatian government is serious about the bridge.

Lucky for me the bridge will stay clear of Komarna Beach and as far as I can judge only about 2/3 of the bridge will even be visible from Komarna.

It is still only work preparing for the road, but it is on both sides of the Mali Ston Channel. The work on the road on Peljesac is also visible from Komarna. It will be interesting to see how much more has been done when I get back next month.

May 16. 2006
Croatian Transport Minister Bozidar Kalmeta met his Bosnian counterpart Branko Dokic in Sarajevo on Monday to discuss plans for the construction of a bridge connecting the peninsula of Peljesac with the rest of Croatia, regarding the fact that the future bridge is expected to be built off Neum, a town on Bosnia's coastline stretch.

He added that the Bosnian delegation explained that it would like to ensure unobstructed passage to Neum Bay for ships up to 200 metres long. These ships can have different heights, depending on whether they are cargo vessels or tourist cruisers.

Croatia has two proposals which can make it possible for Bosnia to have unobstructed access to the high seas -- the construction of a fixed bridge with a height of 40 metres or the construction of a bascule bridge. According to Kalmeta, the latter solution is likelier.

Zagreb will send Sarajevo projects for both solutions and within next 30 days a final agreement should be reached.

Land work is progressing. It seems that there will be space for some buildings also at the mainland. According to some locals there will be shops and a motel.Picture

Picture from Komarna Beach:

Not so bad considering that the first plans were that the bridge should start on the beach.

October 2006

Construction work seems to have stopped for now, and rumours are that there has been made an agreement with the government in BiH that the bridge can be build if it is 42 meter high!

All the land-works on the mainland site is pretty much completed and waiting for the pillars to start building up. There is no sign of construction on the Peljesac side.

April 3. 2007

There has been no visible work done since October. Local rumors tell that work is scheduled to start again after Easter.

October. 2007

Nothing new. Everything seems to have stopped at the mainland side, but there are some land work visible at Peljesac and local say that foundation work for the pillows are to start soon.

Because of its unique blend of affordability, culture, history and wonderful food, The Lonely Planet, a leading travel book publisher, recently rated Croatia as the number one worldwide tourist destination for 2005. The publication said that Croatia has not been "over-touristed, but it has developed an excellent tourism infrastructure." Croatia was honored with a fourth place finish for 2004, but the new top rating is a sign of the country's increasing appeal.
